4. Restoration of Italian Marble Statue of Maharaja Rameshwar Singh

Standing amidst the busy crossroads of Lalit Narayan Mithila University, the Italian marble statue of Maharaja Rameshwar Singh is a colossal piece of art built during the 20th century. The statue is the embodiment of the rich and magnificent history of Darbhanga and its contribution towards history of Bihar. Unfortunately, due to unknown circumstances, the statue was damaged such that the nose broke off. By the collective efforts of the University and ESAMAAD Foundation, RATH was contacted to restore the long-lost nose of the Maharaja. It was a long process of documentation, material analysis, photography, cleaning procedure and reconstruction but ultimately the nose of the statue was restored. Following the restoration, the team members applied a protective coating to further protect from deterioration. 

 

  • This sculpture of the Maharaja was built between years 1929-1934. It is an artwork by Italian sculptors Antonio Carestiato and Luigi Piasentin, the colossal marble statue stands proudly in the campus of Lalit Narayan Mithila University venerating the Maharaja. 
  • The process of the restoration included:

– Documentation

– Solvent cleaning 

– A silicone mould was prepared to adjust the proper shape of the nose prior the application of the casting material.

– Casting material consisted of Marble dust and resin. The silicone mould was filled with the mixture of marble dust and resin and was kept aside for drying.

– After which the nose was removed from the mould and was stuck on the statue with resin.

– Lastly, the nose was carefully burnished to bring that proper shape and smoothness.
