Sir Rameshwar Singh was the Knight Commander of the Indian Empire, and later became the Maharaja of Darbhanga. He was born in January 1860 and was a member of the Indian Civil Service from 1878 to 1882 after which he resigned. Soon after his resignation, he was made a Rajah Bahadur and was appointed as a member of the Bengal Legislative Council. He succeeded his brother to the throne of Darbhanga Raj in December 1898 and had twice been elected to the membership of the Viceregal Council. He was made a K.C.I.E., and received a gold medal of Kaiser-i-hind in 1902. The annual income of the Raj was about 40 lakhs. He was the President of the British Indian Association, Bihar Landholders Association, Zamindari Panchayat, and Bharat Dharma Mahamandal, the religious organisation of Hindus in India. In August 1902 he was appointed as a member of the Indian Police Commission, which is now completing its work in Shimla.
This sculpture of the Maharaja was built between years 1929-1934. It is an artwork by Italian sculptors Antonio Carestiato and Luigi Piasentin and the colossal marble statue stands proudly in the campus of Lalit Narayan Mithila University venerating the valorous Maharaja. The project taken by our organization was restoration of the damaged nose of the statue that had broken off few years ago. Our team of conservators-restorers was successful in remodeling the lost nose of the Maharaja and re-integrating the head of the statue. It was a matter of immense pride for us to be trusted by the University to let us handle their approximately 90 years old heritage as RATH’s first venture.
